10 Tips From a Robotic Pool Cleaner Technician

Regularly check and maintain the chemical balance of the pool water, even in winter, as improper water chemistry will cause degradation of the pool cleaner and its components. Correct what chemistry is the number one way to increase the longevity of your robotic pool cleaner.
Avoid overusing the pool cleaner. Robotic pool cleaners do not need to run daily for most pools. Instead, try using it twice a week starting with Mondays and Fridays and monitoring the cleanliness of the pool. An additional day can be added if required or during periods of heavy use/debris.
Remove the cleaner from the pool after each use and store out of direct sunlight. Minimising the exposure to pool chemistry and UV will greatly increase the longevity of your cleaner.
After each use of the pool cleaner, clean and empty the debris basket. This ensures the cleaner’s efficiency and prevents any blockages. The cleaner should always start a cycle with an empty basket.
Schedule regular servicing of the pool cleaner to maintain its effectiveness and prevent strain on its motors. A well-maintained cleaner will have a longer lifespan. We recommend the cleaner be serviced each winter for cleaners that experience heavy use (More than 3 runs per week) and every other winter for cleaners with normal/low use (1 – 3 runs per week).
Before running the pool cleaner, manually remove any large debris such as sticks and pool toys that the cleaner may not be able to handle. This prevents clogging and potential damage to the cleaner.
Keep the cable away from potential damage sources like lawn mowers and dogs. Damage to the cable could render the cleaner inoperable and lead to additional expenses.
Ensure that the control box is not exposed to water, especially during heavy rain. Some locations may not be as dry as they seem, so take precautions to avoid water damage.
After each use, wrap the cable properly to avoid tangles and kinks. Tangled cables can lead to operational issues and may reduce the cleaner’s effectiveness.

To increase the effectiveness of the cleaner there are three things to consider

  • When possible, avoid having the cable enter from a corner. It is best to have the cable enter the pool from the middle of the longest side.
  • Don’t use more cable than necessary. Use only enough cable for the cleaner to reach the furthest corner.
  • Try starting the cleaner from different positions in the pool. Varying the start position can lead to better results and increase the coverage. You may find there is an optimal starting position in your pool.
